A Musical Community
The overall music scene in Rockland is fitting for a town of its size. Musically, what takes up most of Rockland’s showcases is the music department of the high school. Rockland High School’s music department puts on their own shows throughout the school year. In December the band and choir typically performs holiday pieces in a concert they hold in the auditorium in the High School. They also perform what they call a Pops Concert in the spring where the musical groups perform a wide range of music by varying composers. They also hold an annual Broadway Night where selections from two musicals are chosen and performed by students who audition and receive their songs. The Rockland High School music department also makes quite a few appearances around town. They are known to go to the senior center around the holidays and perform christmas carols for those who spend their time there, everyone talks about how wonderful it is and they bring a lot of holiday cheer to the community. The band plays at Rockland’s annual Holiday Stroll in the center of town, flooding the streets with small chamber groups who play Christmas tunes. Rockland’s Marching Band is known for pepping up the crowds in the stands with their fight song, and preforming a show at half time. The band is also seen marching in the town's memorial day and veterans day parade.
Rockland sees other musical groups throughout the year, for the last few years a Beatles tribute band has performed on the outdoor stage of Rockland’s Middle School during the summer, people bring their lawn chairs and blankets and enjoy the summer weather and music as a community. One of the biggest sources of Rockland’s musical culture is The Blue Moon Coffee House, located in the parish hall of Channing Unitarian Universalist Church in Rockland. The coffee house holds live music and open mics monthly from September to May every year. Many different types of bands play at The Blue Moon Coffee House such as Americana bands, fiddle duos, folk bands, and soloists. The Blue Moon Coffee house sells tickets for as low as ten dollars and kids under 12 are let in for free, so everyone in the community can enjoy a night of music, coffee, and snacks. Another big source of music and entertainment in Rockland is Players Sports Bar, which typically has live bands, soloist like South Shore’s very own Kristen Merlin, and nights for dancing. Players hosts DJ’s and open mics on the weekends so that people of Rockland can watch the game and enjoy music and dancing with the community. Lastly, with a more classical approach, Rockland is home of one of the few Piano Mills on the South Shore. They offer piano lessons as well as other instruments, and they sell a variety of instruments and musical equipment.
